It starts off with:

But you didn't even notice

It's hard to breathe when all we know is
The struggle of staying above,
The rising water line.

How many of us have gone through a tough situation and are still living our lives as though we’re still in it? Still having trouble sleeping or looking forward to the day ahead. Forgetting that we made it through the tough times.

I have a tendency to make it through one tough stretch and look ahead for the next one—even though it probably won’t ever arrive—instead of appreciating where I am now.

Then the song moves on to:

You hold tight to your umbrella
Well darlin, I’m just tryin’ to tell ya
That there’s always been a rainbow,
Hangin’ over your head.
If you could see what I see
You’d be blinded by the colors
Yellow, red, and orange and green
And at least a million others
So tie up your boat,
Take off your coat,
and take a look around.

It always seems so much easier to see the bright side of a situation when you’re not in the middle of it. My wife and I know that Dane will be fine in the future, because we’ve already gone through those teenage years.

Even though your friends and family members can sometimes see the rainbow beyond your struggles, it can be tough to see what they see when you’re going through it yourself, or have in the past.

I hope you remember that you have a rainbow over your head, showing you that you’ve made it through the storm. It just can take a while to see it.
