There are people who put their dreams in a little box and say, "Yes, I've got dreams, of course I've got dreams." Then they put the box away and bring it out once in awhile to look in it, and yep, they're still there. These are great dreams, but they never even get out of the box. It takes an uncommon amount of guts to put your dreams on the line, to hold them up and say, "How good or how bad am I?" That's where courage comes in. Erma Louise Bombeck A Dream Come True We arrive at the hospital once again, for yet another appointment. Mum and dad guide me into the hospital room and sit me down on the chair. “Hello Winter,” I hear the doctor say “how are you?” “Ok, but twelve years of my life I have been blind, please tell me you have good news.” “I’ll get your results now,” says the doctor. “Here comes the doctor,” says mum. I anxiously await for what the doctor has to say. As I sit up straight, I wish I could see mum, dad and the doctor’s facial expressions. As the doctor opens his mouth he nervously says, “I’m sorry winter but from looking at your results there is only a twenty-five chance that you’ll ever get your vision.” I get home from hospital and ask mum to take me straight to my room and she then gives me a kiss goodnight. As I daze off into a deep sleep, I begin dreaming about how nice it would be to see everything around me and being able to enjoy life. I’ll pray every night until my birthday starting from now for my vision, I think to myself. Days and days go by and I continue to pray, every day and every night, but yet still no vision. I tell mum that I’m beginning to give up on praying and that I should just accept the fact that I will never get my vision and I will never enjoy life like any other twelve year old can. Mum knows that everything I am saying is true but still says not to give up because nobody else is. The night has finally arrived, the night before my birthday. It is the last time I pray before my thirteenth birthday. Mum helps me get dressed and ready for bed. I can’t believe that almost thirteen years of my life I have not been able to see and have fun or go to school, like all the other kids. I hop into bed mum, dad and my little brother come in to kiss me goodnight. As they walk out I start praying. When I finish praying I fall into another deep sleep. I wake up feeling refreshed and happy. I rub my eyes in disbelief. Is this real or is it all a dream? I can see, I scream in joy. I run into mum and dads room where my whole family is, they all have strange looks on their faces. “I can see, I can see” I say ecstatically. They all give me hugs and kisses in joy, “happy birthday they all say.” “I can’t believe that it took almost thirteen years for you to get your vision.” Says mum. This is an absolute dream come true. I am finally able to enjoy life like any other normal thirteen year old. This has been the best birthday ever, I don’t have to be at the hospital more than twice a week. Only once a month now.
