We Lakota also call ourselves
Pte Taoyate, or The People Belonging to the Buffalo
and, more commonly, The Buffalo Nation. The
buffalo was the main reason we thrived on the northern
Great Plains. That great animal was a source of food,
shelter, clothing, and spiritual strength. Our relationship
with it was symbiotic. In our reality it dwells in the west,
a place of power from which also come Thunder and
Lightning. Of the many reasons the buffalo enabled
us the survive and thrive, generosity is at the core,
A creation story tell us that it was a female buffalo
that stepped up to give of herself in order that we could
live and become strong. Like Grandmother Earth, she
epitomized generosity, and it is through that generosity
that we survived, thrived, and became who we are.
Life, after all, comes through the Mother.
