O ano de 325 é especialmente importante para os cristãos, pois nele ocorreu o “Concílio de Niceia”, que oficialmente instituiu o Catolicismo ou Igreja Católica, que hoje é seguida por mais da metade dos cristãos espalhados pelo mundo, pois existem outras Igrejas, como a ortodoxa, a anglicana e outras que igualmente reúnem os cristãos (inclusive o Espiritismo).
Até esse ano os cristãos não possuíam nenhuma estrutura oficial que os representasse, apenas a comunhão das diversas igrejas com troca de correspondência e visitação de quando em vez entre seus representantes. Isso implicou, com o passar do tempo, que surgisse uma certa estrutura.
Antes do Concílio de Niceia, os cristãos eram organizados sob três patriarcas, os bispos de “Antioquia” de jurisdição sobre a Síria, a Ásia Menor e a Grécia; de “Alexandria” de jurisdição sobre o Egito e os Bispos de “Roma” de jurisdição sobre o Ocidente. Posteriormente os bispos de “Constantinopla e Jerusalém” foram adicionados aos patriarcas por razões administrativas. Não era uma hierarquia formal, mas os patriarcas (ou bispos) dessas localidades agiam no sentido de ajudar a resolver conflitos.

Before the Council of Nicaea , Christians were grouped under three patriarchs , the bishops of " Antioch " jurisdiction over Syria , Asia Minor and Greece ; of " Alexandria " jurisdiction over Egypt and the Bishops "Rome" of jurisdiction over the West .
