July 30th, 1975: National Teamsters Union leader Jimmy Hoffa disappears, last seen coming out of a restaurant in Bloomingfield Hills, Michigan.
Jimmy Hoffa was a major labor organizer and was watched closely by the FBI. He served 4 years of a 13-year sentence for jury tampering and was released in 1971, pardoned by Richard Nixon, but was forbidden from taking any union leadership positions. Yet he had plans to regain control of the Teamsters and on the day of his disappearance, Jimmy Hoffa was allegedly meeting with Anthony Giacalone and Anthony Provenzano for lunch. Once allies, Hoffa and Provenzano had a falling out and it is speculated that they were going to try to bury the hatchet that day. Turns out it was Hoffa that would be buried. This story is at the center of Martin Scorsese's upcoming film The Irishman, set to be released in Fall 2019.
